Earth Day
The Earth is in crisis and Earth Day has taken on huge global significance. It is needed to spur grassroots activism as it did that first year, inspiring people not only to make changes in their own lifestyles, but to join with others to create an effective movement that can push through legislation and insist on strict environmental standards. American consumers have never before been so environmentally aware. In March, the Yale Center of Environmental Law and Policy’s Environmental Attitudes and Behavior Project released a study showing that 83 percent of Americans now say global warming is a “serious” problem. What’s more, according to the survey of 1,000 adults nationwide, 63 percent agree that the United States “is in as much danger from environmental hazards, such as air pollution and global warming, as it is from terrorists.” Source: Brita Belli, "Earth Day Activation : This Year, Earth Day Network Returns to Its Roots", E : The Environmental Magazine, Volume XIX, Number 2, MARCH/APRIL 2008.
Only certain people need to worry about participating in Earth Day -- those who breathe air, drink water, and care about the future of life on the planet. So, unless you’re part of the invasion force from planet Klaxon-5 that’s been monitoring Grinning Planet transmissions from its stealthified location 8 miles above the surface, we’ve compiled a slew of great Earth Day activities for you -- things you can do to make the earth less polluted, greener, and more sustainable for the long term. Everyday there are reports in newspapers, on television, on the radio and the web with suggestions on how to reduce our carbon footprint, make our homes and businesses more energy efficient and create communities that are sustainable. Now, you can now sign up for daily environmental tips sent directly to you by e-mail from EPA. Also available is a green tip "widget" you can download for daily environmental tips. A widget is a small piece of Web programming code that can be added to a blog, wiki, or Web page. These daily environmental tips are a part of EPA's 2008 Earth Day celebration. April 22 is Earth Day and this year, EPA is launching several initiatives throughout the month of April to help raise environmental awareness.Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
