EarthTrends is a comprehensive online database, maintained by the World Resources Institute, that focuses on the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world. Major data sections include:

    Description and Notes:

    GreenFILE offers well-researched but accessible information covering all aspects of human impact on the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles include content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done on each level to minimize negative impact. Topics covered include global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. GreenFILE is multidisciplinary by nature and draws on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology. The database provides indexing and abstracts for approximately 295,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,600 records.

    Pollution Abstracts

    Description and Notes:

    Pollution Abstracts combines information on scientific research and government policies in a single resource. Topics are covered from the standpoints of atmosphere, emissions, mathematical models, effects on people and animals, and environmental action in response to global pollution issues. Material from conference proceedings and hard-to-find documents has been summarized along with information from primary journals in the field.

    Description and Notes:

    Google has created this database to speed location of reports and journal articles available on the Internet. Google is also working hard on facilitating links to subscription resources offered by university libraries. However not all the links work yet. So if you find an interesting article or resources via this database, be sure to check whether it is available via the MSU Libraries electronic or print collections.

    CAB Abstracts

    Coverage:

    1910-

    Description and Notes:

    CAB covers the subject of environmental studies in the broadest sense. It includes: agronomy, biotechnology, crop protection, economics, environmental degradation and remediation, forestry, herbicides, irrigation, leisure, recreation and tourism, microbiology, nutrition, parasitology, rural development and much more. Journals, monographs, conferences, books, annual reports and other sources from more than one country are scanned for inclusion in the database.

    Coverage:

    Description and Notes:

    GeoRef is the online version of the American Geological Institute's GeoRef database covering the world's literature in geology and the geosciences. It covers the geology of North America since 1785 and the geology of the rest of the world since 1933. Over 3,000 journals in 40 languages are scanned, as well as books, maps, and reports and most U.S. Geological Survey publications and U.S. and Canadian master's theses and doctoral dissertations. Environmental topics covered very well in this database include energy sources, volcanic eruptions, groundwater pollution, earthquakes, erosion, nuclear reactor sites, and geostatistics.

    Groundwater and Soil Contamination Database

    Coverage:

    Description and Notes:

    This database published by the American Geological Institute includes over 60,000 references to documents published since 1975. Coverage is worldwide, with emphasis on the United States. Journal articles, books, conference proceedings, theses and dissertations are included. Also covered are all relevant reports of the U.S. Geological Survey, and reports of the U.S. Departments of Energy, Defense, Health and Human Services, and the Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

    Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts

    Description and Notes:

    ASFA covers 5,000 serial publications, books, reports, conference proceedings, translations and limited distribution literature. It covers biological sciences, ocean technology policy, aquatic pollution, and environmental quality.

    Oceanic Abstracts

    Coverage:

    1981-

    Description and Notes:

    Oceanic Abstracts is focused exclusively on worldwide technical literature pertaining to the marine and brackish-water environment. The database focuses on marine biology and physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, non-living resources, meteorology and geology, plus environmental, technological, and legislative topics.

    Multidisciplinary citation index with coverage of environmental science. Web of Science also provides the ability to search for cited references to an article.     International Bibliography of the Social Sciences

    Description and Notes:

    International Bibliography of Social Sciences, from the British Library of Political and Economic Science of the London School of Economics and Political Science, indexes the information contained in over 2,600 social sciences journals and 6,000 books each year. Coverage includes both core and specialized material from over 100 countries in more than 90 languages. Approximately 70% of the records are in English, and articles in other languages are displayed with both the original language title as well as with an English translation. The comprehensive coverage provided in the database, while based on the core disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science and sociology, also reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences.
    Note: There is only one port for both campus-wide and remote access use.

    International Political Science Abstracts (IPSA)

    Description and Notes:

    The most important of all the political science indexes, produced by the International Political Science Association. Indexes and abstracts articles from periodicals published throughout the world. The abstracts summarize the source articles. Articles in English are abstracted in English; those in other languages are abstracted in French, with all titles translated into English.

    PAIS International (including Archive)

    Description and Notes:

    The PAIS International database from CSA contains references to more than 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more. Newspapers and newsletters are not indexed. PAIS International includes publications from over 120 countries throughout the world. In addition to English, some of the indexed materials are published in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
    MSU faculty and staff also have access to the PAIS Archive database through this link. The PAIS Archive comprises a retrospective conversion of the PAIS Annual Cumulated Bulletin, Volumes 1-62, published 1915-1976, containing over 1 million records of additional resources.

    Worldwide Political Science Abstracts via CSA

    Description and Notes:

    Worldwide Political Science Abstracts is building on the merged backfiles of Political Science Abstracts, published by IFI / Plenum, 1975-2000, and ABC POL SCI, published by ABC-CLIO, 1984-2000. The database provides citations, abstracts, and indexing of the international serials literature in political science and its complementary fields, including international relations, law, and public administration / policy. The serials list of the new database, which currently contains 1,304 titles, is actively under construction, with a focus on expanding international coverage.

    Ecolex is a gateway to international environmental law. The list of subjects includes: climate/atmosphere; fresh water; marine environment; soils; forests; biodiversity; energy; protected areas; hazardous substances; and wastes. ECOLEX includes information on multilateral treaties; national legislation; European Union instruments; international "soft law" and related documents; law and policy literature; and judicial decisions."

    Provides thorough, reliable indexing of over 842 journals, yearbooks, institutes, bar association organs, law reviews and university publications from the U.S., Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. Covers all areas of jurisprudence, including court decisions, legislation, and original scholarship.

    Description and Notes:

    Covers almost 1000 law reviews, journals, and newspapers. Provides comprehensive and cumulative indexing for approximately 1000 legal publications, including all major law reviews, seven legal newspapers, specialty law and bar association journals. Also covers law related articles from more than 1,000 additional business and general interest periodicals, as well as major legal publications from other English speaking countries. Covers law reviews, case notes, biographies, legal profession news, and legislative news and analysis. Some topics include legal specialties like copyright law, real property, international trade, labor law criminal justice, civil rights, and law office management. Updated monthly.
