Splendor of the Grass: the History, Art and Science of Lawns and Lawn Care

4th floor, West Wing
May 6 - September13, 2013

Since the 16th century when cultivated "lawnscapes" were a luxury of wealthy European landowners, "the lawn" -- an area of short, mown grass in a yard, garden, or park -- has evolved to become a symbol of American suburbia and an obsession spawning a multi-billion dollar industry. This exhibit chronicles the development of lawns and lawn care in the United States, exploring socio-cultural aspects, advancements in mowing technology, and turfgrass science and industry sectors. Research at MSU, from Professor William J. Beal's "grass garden" in 1872 to today's experiments at the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center, is profiled, as well as the activities of the Libraries' own Turfgrass Information Center.

Exhibit produced by Pete Cookingham and Anita Ezzo.
