International Year of the Cooperative
October 19, 12:10 - 12:50 pm
Main Library Reference Instruction Room
Presented by David Finet, General Manager of the East Lansing Food Cooperative, and Paulette Stenzel, MSU Professor of Sustainability and International Business Law
October is National Cooperative Month and 2012 is the UN's "International Year of the Cooperative." Please join us to celebrate and learn! David Finet, General Manager of the East Lansing Food Cooperative (ELFCO) will speak about the history of cooperatives, the cooperative movement in the twenty-first century, ELFCO's inception, and what ELFCO is doing today. Paulette Stenzel, MSU Professor of Sustainability and International Business Law will use photos and stories from her travels to illustrate how cooperatives are important in the world of Fair Trade and direct trade. For example, small farmers' coffee cooperatives in Guatemala and Mexico work with Cooperative Coffees, a group of roasters in the U.S. and Canada, to bring their product coffee shops and retailers here in Michigan and elsewhere.
Light refreshments from ELFCO will be provided.
