The MSU Library's Information and Referral Center, a high volume service desk, was a permanent structure with no possible adjustment for the new technology which was being introduced at the desk. As a result, staff were suffering ergonomic related injuries. To address the injuries, a new and flexible desk was recommended.

After consulting with various library furniture companies, it was determined that no completely adjustable desks were available. One company expressed an interest in designing a desk which could be easily and quickly adjusted to different staff heights, and Libraries' staff worked with their designer to create a service desk. In the process of designing this desk, other factors were taken into consideration including wheelchair access, visibility, functionality, and wire management.

The new desk design had addressed each of these issues and provided an ergonomically correct environment for staff.
