Collection Summary:

The Michigan State University Student Activism Collection consists of documents, newspapers and newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and flyers dealing with student activism at Michigan State University in the 1960s and 1970s.

Historical Background:

Michigan State University, originally named the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, was founded in 1855 as an agricultural college.  By 1964, the name had been changed for the fifth and final time to Michigan State University.

The 1960s and 1970s were a tumultuous time due to, among other things, the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement.  Michigan State University, like many universities across the United States, was filled with protests, rallies, and political movements striving for equal rights, an end to the Vietnam War, and to end other injustices, both on campus and around the world.
