European Criminology Collection: Book Structure Examples
Books in this case are from the German Criminology collection. The books are mostly from Germany during the 15th through 19th centuries. Many are in horrible disrepair, but this gives the book historian the opportunity to study the structure of the book through several centuries. The binding is much more recent than the manuscript inside, probably 18th century. The pastepaper shows some of the variety of patterns possible with this versatile decorating technique.

This full vellum binding shows some of the structure of such a book on the inside covers. Without the endpaper pasted down, the turn ins (the part of the covering material wrapped around the cover) can be seen. The ends of the sewing slips can be seen laced through the cover. And the blue cloth is a lining material to give support to the textblock.

A book with a patterned pastepaper cover. Pastepapers were easy to make and cheaper than marbled paper or cloth. They offered a decorative element that plain paper, or even leather could not offer.

The cover on this book is completely missing, but offers a view of the sewing. The book was sewn on three flax cords, the ends of which (called slips) would secure the boards in place. The small stitches at the head and tail are called kettle stitches, which is a derivation of the German word kettenstich, meaning chain stitch.

A half vellum binding with paper sides. The paper and vellum corners are missing on the front cover. The paper used for the pasteboards was recycled from old manuscripts and printed materials.

The covering material is mostly missing from this book, offering a view of the pasteboard boards. The brown paper glued to the endpaper is what is left of the paper cover. The sewing on single cords can also be seen.

A paper wrapped book with black pastepaper. Part of the spine is torn away showing the recessed sewing. Recessed sewing began in the 18th century giving binders a smooth surface on the spine. This smooth surface allowed for more elaborate gold tooling and decoration.
