This website is designed to assist MSU students, faculty and staff in identifying research materials located in the MSU Libraries and on the World Wide Web.
It is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather a starting point for further
research. The resources listed below are but a small sampling of materials available in the MSU Libraries and on the Internet. Always consult a Librarian if you have questions or need assistance.
Library of Congress Subject Headings
One of the best ways to achieve the greatest precision in searching the MSU Libraries' online catalog is to use the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Listed below are some of the subject terms that will produce the best results in a search on the topic of Asian / Pacific Islander Americans. Combine these with geographic or subtopical divisions.

and should not be confused with those of Native American ethnic Background.
(2) Hmong are an ethnic group from Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and southern
China.
(3) Pacific Isander is inclusive of the following islands: Fiji, Guam, Hawaii,
Northern Marianas, Palau, Samoa, Tahiti, and Tonga.

Ethnoreligious groups are also included. Although a general directory the numerous entries for Asian / Pacific Islander Americans warrants inclusion on this page. Over one hundred original essays written by scholars and writers with a special interest or knowledge of ethnic groups. Well indexed with many references to additional sources for study.

Chinese American forum (CAF)
Published in Silver Spring, Maryland as a "culture bridge" for Chinese Americans. A magazine written in English and free from political sponsors. As the editors write, "When you read Time, Newsweek, or other American magazines, you will find little space there for Asian Americans. That is why we started publishing this Chinese American Forum (CAF), a nonprofit and independent magazine open to all nationwide and primarily by volunteers. In an authoritarian country, the majority dare not speak; in a democratic society, the minority must speak out."

Hsing tao jih pao (San Francisco, Calif.)
A Chinese American newspaper from San Francisco, the Sing tao daily. This newspaper is written in Chinese and, even without Chinese reading skills, the newspaper provides a look at Northwest Coast Chinese American culture via the photos and adverstising.

Statistics
According to the 1990 United States Census, the Asian / Pacific Islander American population is the fastest growing minority group. The number of individuals of Asian / Pacific Islander descent had doubled between 1980 and 1990, from 3.7 million to 7.2 million. The collective term, "Asian Americans", includes over twenty distinct nationalities and ethnic groups.

Covers a wide range of topics from attitudes to vital statistics. Two tables of contents (general or expanded) together with an extensive bibliography and index make for a very useful tool in locating statistical information on both Asian American and Asian Canadians.
Comparative and historical data is included where appropriate and whenever feasible data is broken down by gender. Sources for the data are compiled from a wide variety of sources including government publications, unpublished government sources, reports, and studies from non-governmental agencies.

Ethnic NewsWatch A large collection of full-text minority journal and newspaper articles from the perspective of American ethnic groups.

Government Printing Office Monthly Catalog
The United States Government is the largest producer of information in the world. This CD-ROM provides access to much of that information. Also check US Government Websites.

Newspaper Abstracts
Provides indexing to 25 American newspapers many of which are owned by the MSU Libraries.

A large index to over 2500 journals in sociology, anthropology, behaviorial sciences and more.

Social Work Abstracts
Contains information in social work and human services. Provides coverage of more than 450 journals in all areas of the profession, including theory and practice, areas of service, social issues, and social problems.

Microform and Other Non-Print Resources in the MSU
Libraries
The Changing University [videorecording] : an Asian-American
perspective, 1994. 6 VHS videocassettes (ca. 8 hrs.)
Tapes 1 and 2 of this set focus on the question of, " Why consider the
diversity of Asian Americans?". "Changing images in Asian American literature" is the
topic of tapes 3 and 4. The title of tape 5 is "Breaking the glass ceiling and tape 6 is a
summary/conclusion by Ronald Takaki. The speakers and panel discussions are from a conference held at Michigan State University on March 17-18, 1994.
