A
collection of Chinese proverbs,
by W. Scarborough and C. Wilfrid Allan (Peiping: The French Bookstore, 1932).
Chinese
discourse is rich in the use of proverbs. These British missionaries decades
ago compiled hundreds of them in Chinese, with English translation--an important
historical record of language and cultural development. The real virtue of it
is as an association copy, since it's signed as owner by Paul Robeson. Cloth
binding with stamped cover, texblock intact but needs to be cleaned.

Early English Versions of the Gesta Romanorum.... Edited by Sidney J.H. Herrtage. London, published for the Early English Text Society by Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, 1932. Extra series, no. 33. "A collection of tales in Latin, some of Eastern origin, romances of chivalry, and legends of saints, originally compiled on the Continent and first printed about 1472. An English translation was printed by Wynkyn de Worde. Though Roman emperors are mentioned in some of these, they are not true narratives of historical events. To each tale a moral is attached. Figner,
Vera- Zapechatlennyi trud. Chast 1. Moskva, Zadruga, 1921.
This book is the first edition of Vera Figner's memoir, published just after
the Russian Revolution. Figner was raised in an upper class home as the daughter
of a government official and landowner. Youthful idealism led her to the medical
field, where she hoped to become a doctor and aid impoverished Russian peasants.
Through family ties and acquaintances, she gradually became a part of the growing
radical and anarchist movement in Russia that believed that only violent force
could bring about change in the tsarist regime. She was a key organizer in the
assassination of Tsar Alexander II, and spent twenty years in prison as a result.
As a populist, the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 came as a shock to her, and
she never joined the Bolshevik party, but she was an immensely important figure
to Russia feminists and to the revolutionary movement in general. This autobiography
details her life and what brought her to the conclusion that violent action
was the only way to bring change to Russia in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Later editions are widely held, but this earliest edition is rare because it
is printed on poor materials indicative of the state of the economy in Russia
in the late civil war period. Conservation Treatment-box with special acid
absorbing interleaving. Cost $50.00
The
Illustrated Botany edited
by John B. Newman.
Adopted by Lana
G. Dart in memory of Dr. Dorothy O. Dart, M.D
With gorgeous illustrated
prints of flowers that are as vibrant today as when it was printed in 1846,
this octavo-sized volume has severe foxing of the text pages and would clearly
benefit from being adopted. The cover of the book is also damaged after 150+
years of use. With its leather spine and original marbled paper covers, this
volume is a wonderful example of nineteenth century binding, which often used
marbled paper covers to reduce the cost of a full leather binding. Our volume,
which originally belonged to Gladys Olds Anderson, daughter of Ransom E. Olds
(founder of Oldsmobile and REO Motors), is of particular interest to historians
because of the variety of paper types used in the printing, including wood based
and cotton rag. The vibrancy of the prints make this both a beautiful volume
to read as well as a marvelous resource for scholars. Estimated
cost of conservation $400.00

Private Prayers Put Forth by Authority during the Reign of Queen Elizabeth. Clay, William Keatinge. Edited for the Parker Society. Cambridge, University Press, 1851. This volume contains the Primer of 1559 (the 1559 Book of Common Prayer), the Orarium of 1560, the Preces Privatae of 1564, the Book of Christian Prayers of 1578, and an appendix containing the Litany of 1544. These are significant religious works in the development of English Protestant Christianity. BX 5035 .P26 c. 2
A General Index of the Publications of the Parker Society. Gough, Henry. Edited for the Parker Society. Cambridge, University Press, 1855. The purpose of the Parker Society was to publish the works of the fathers and early writers of the reformed English church (i.e. the Church of England), without abridgement, alteration, or omission, from the accession of King Edward VI to the death of Queen Elizabeth I. There are 55 volumes in the series. M.S.U. Libraries has most volumes in their original bindings. Many need repair work, not just the index, the Private Prayers..., and Lancelot Andrewes' sermons. While it is possible to purchase microfiche of the materials, this is not a format in which any scholar would enjoy studying the material. A scholar wants to check out works like these and take them home to read, as religious material requires slow and careful study. The volumes contain copies of the early editions of the Book of Common Prayer, other prayers, and sermons, as well as published and unpublished works by English and Continental reformers. BX 5013 .P2 Index
These two volumes from the larger set with blind stamping on the cover boards with gold center emblem are a nice example of 19th century cloth bindings. Unfortunately the spines have been poorly repaired many years ago with packing tape which needs to be chemically removed. Estimate for the two volumes $100.00

Ninety-Six Sermons. Andrewes, Lancelot. Oxford, J.H. Parker, 1841-1843. Andrewes was one of the men chosen by King James I to produce the King James version of the Bible. He worked on the team of scholars that produced the Pentateuch (first five books of the Old Testament) and the historical books. Theologically, he was one of the principle influences in the formation of a distinctive Anglican theology, which, in reaction from the rigidity of Puritanism, was reasonable in outlook. His sermons were known for their passionate and vivid energy, their scholarly interest, and their literary merit. T.S. Eliot believed his sermons ranked with the finest English prose of any time, although they were hard reading. (British Authors before 1800, 1961, p. 9; Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church,1958, p. 50.). BX 5037 .A5 1841 v. 1-4 All 4 volumes of this set need rebacking. There is some damage to the textblock as well which will require resewing for two of the volumes. Estimate for the 4 volumes $150.00

London, Published for the Early English Text Society by N. Trubner and Co., 1866. Original series. "Melusina, a fairy of French folk-lore, the water-sprite of the fountain of Lusignan in Poitou....consented to marry Raymond of Poitiers on condition that he should never see her on a Saturday, on which day she reverted to her mermaid-like condition. Her husband broke the compact, whereupon she fled. She was supposed to give warning by shrieks when misfortune menaced a member of the family.
