Network connections in the Library

Within the Main Library there are more than 300 network connection ports, distributed throughout all floors in both wings of the building. Look at empty study carrels for an outlet box with a bright orange plug or orange NET LINK sign. Ask at a service desk if you need help locating one.

The following list indicates which branch libraries have NET LINK ports available to patrons.

All residence halls have ethernet network connections.

Access to wireless network in the library

The Main Library currently offers wireless network access to MSU students, staff, and faculty throughout the building. Limited guest access is also available to non-MSU affliated users.

Windows users with the Intel 4965 Wireless Adapter Card in their laptops may have problems connecting with our network. If you experience problems connecting to the new wireless, please read the knowledge base article 10608, which has information about the upgraded wireless and how to install the new drivers.

Effective November 23, 2010, MSUnet Wireless now uses the same DHCP registration method used for wired connections. A separate log-in to is no longer necessary. This change only affects users not using the guest access. You can read knowledge base article 14931 for more detailed information about the changes to wireless access.

How to establish wireless network access?

There are different methods of making a wireless connection to MSUnet Wireless in the Main Library, and on campus based on operating system you are using. Windows currently supports wireless access under XP, Vista and Windows 7. The Macintosh operating system can be configured to work in our network under versions 10.3.x (Panther), 10.4.x (Tiger) and 10.5.x (Leopard). Mobile devices are also supported, and instructions for the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch systems are listed below.lThe links provided by ATS will give you detailed instruction and screenshots for each system:

What is the URL (web address) for the wireless login page?

Go to https://1.1.1.1/login.html and enter your MSU NetID and password.

Does the Main Library check out Wireless Network cards or laptops equipped with such cards?

No. To buy a Wireless Network card for your laptop, please visit the MSU Computer Store in the Computer Center (432-0700).

Will I be able to access the MSU Libraries’ online resources (e.g. the catalog, electronic journals, etc.) via the Wireless Network?

In order to access the library resources from the main library using your laptop with a wireless connection, you will need to set the proxy server settings (see Off Campus Access for instructions).

Can I print from my computer via a Wireless Network connection?

Yes, you can print to MSU printers in the Main Library and across campus using MSU NetPrint. For complete instructions, see http://netprint.msu.edu.

Setting up a Mac for wireless E-token or Copy Center printing:

Open "System preferences" and choose "Print & Fax."
Click on the plus sign (+) in the middle left of the "Print & Fax" screen.
On the next screen, click the box (top left) that says "IP Printer."
On the same page,
1. In "Protocol", choose "Line Printer Daemon - LPD"
2. For "Address", enter: netprint.msu.edu
3. For "Queue", enter: PrintLocker
4. For "Print Using", select "HP" from the list of printers, then choose "HP Laserjet 8100 series" from the long list of HP printers that displays.
Click "add". No need to enter anything on the next screen ("Installable Options"), so click "Continue".
The next screen will show "netprint.msu.edu" as one of your printers.
Close "Print & Fax."
Print desired pages.
Open Safari and go to: netprint.msu.edu.
Log in with your MSUnet ID and password and the next screen will ask you to "Select printer" and show the message "x print jobs await your action."
Select "Main Library", then the desired e-token printer or Copy Center (which is at the bottom of the list). Then click "print" next to the job you wish to print.
