The TowerThe Tower : The True Story of the Man Who Explored It / Schuiten and Peeters ; translation by Randy & Jean-Marc Lofficier. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1993. -- 112 p. : ill. ; 31 cm. -- (Stories of the Fantastic ; 5) -- Translation of: Les Cités Obscures 3: La Tour. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.S353T613 1993Part 1: "Where Giovanni Battista, Keeper by Trade, Realizes that he has Eaten too many Eggs" 13 p. -- Summary: Giovanni is a maintenance man in charge of a large section high in a large tower. Mortar crumbles and stones fall, and Giovanni repairs the damage as best he can. He has been doing this for thirty years. For quite a few years no inspector has come by, and what he can see of the neighboring sections is in even worse repair than his own. His letters asking for help and supplies are not answered. He grows his own grain on ledges, and keeps a flock of birds for their eggs. The building settles with big noises. This happens while he's fixing himself a drink, and breaks some of the glassware of his still. He decides to climb down against all orders, and find out what's going on. Part 2: "Where we Learn that he who Tries too Hard to Descend often ends up Climbing Higher" 15 p. -- Summary: Giovanni begins the long climb down the outside of the tower. His first stop is to visit Horatio, a fellow Keeper. Horatio seems to have gone mad, so Giovanni leaves him to his ravings. Giovanni slips and falls quite a distance into a pocket of muck, and finds another Keeper dead. In that Keeper's section he finds a broken mail duct and a heap of his own letters, some of them very old. After a night's sleep Giovanni harvests some bamboo from a ledge and builds himself a large kite, big enough and with controls that should allow him to ride the updrafts down alongside the tower. He is soon floating blind in a layer of clouds, and hits the side of the tower. With control of the kite lost he gets caught in a strong updraft and crashes somewhere that he thinks must be near the top of the tower. Part 3: "Of Elias Aureolus Palingenius, of the Young Milena and some Mysterious Paintings" 15 p. -- Summary: Giovanni wakes up in the care of a scholar named Elias and his young woman assistant, Milena. Elias knows a lot about the history of the tower, and wonders particularly why Giovanni, the last functioning Keeper, should suddenly have decided to leave his post after thirty years. Milena makes Giovanni take a bath, then gives him a tour of their crowed section full of shops and offices. Returning to Elias's house he finds Elias giving tours of the tower's history as depicted in a series of large colorful paintings. These paintings, shown on the final four pages of this part of the story and on two pages of the next part, are the only color that has been used in the story so far. After this the album returns to black and white until the final eight pages. In every case the color and black and white presentations interpenetrate but remain distinct, so that no page is fully in color. Part 4: "Of Dreams, Star-Gazing, and Certain Other Things about which Decency Requires Discretion" 19 p. -- Summary: Elias gives Giovanni a stack of books to study so he can learn about the tower. After Giovanni has studied for a month Elias tells him that, philosophically, the tower is a failed human attempt to climb from the material plane, through the spiritual and astral planes, to the divine plane. Milena starts keeping Giovanni company in bed, and says that Elias is worried about something. Elias keeps going to the center of the tower and taking measurements. He thinks Giovanni has come in response to a prophecy, and gives him the task of traveling to the top and the bottom of the tower, to "unveil its secrets." Milena wants to go with Giovanni. Part 5: "Of the Loves of Claudius and some Voracious Hounds" 13 p. -- Summary: The journey to the top of the tower takes Milena and Giovanni through sections in various stages of ruin, and in a variety of styles of architecture. They see abandoned machines, and birds, but see no other people for three days. Then they find dogs and corpses, and are stopped by a man with a crossbow. His name is Claudius, and he is defending a large machine without being able to say what the machine does. He calls himself the conscience of the tower, and expects that times will get better, is all. Claudius lets them go. As they climb the air gets colder, and Giovanni eventually reaches the top. All he can see is the sky and the sun, apparently no closer than it would have seemed from the ground. Part 6: "Where we End in such a Strange Way, that it is Better to Remain Silent" 18 p. -- Summary: Giovanni is determined to find the builders. Milena and Giovanni find evidence of hasty departure from the summit, and especially many large frames from which paintings have been removed. They find much gold, and Giovanni insists on loading a chest of gold to take with them. They find large cranes or winches, with cables by which the builders must hve lowered themselves to the ground. Using the chest of gold as a weight Giovanni and Milena begin the descent. Eventually they have to throw out all of the gold to slow their descent, and from the the halfway point they fall the rest of the way. At the bottom they find more bundles of wealth abandoned long ago, but also paintings. They climb out of a hole in the ruins and find themselves, still drawn in black and white, in the midst of a color painting. A war is being fought with swords and rifles with bayonets. The battle is dreamlike. They don't understand it, but emerge triumphant, and soon the tower and its black and white world seem to be only a legend.

True, the exterior aspects of the royal seat of the Lunite Commonwealth were as dazzling as ever; rose marble and jade green towers shimmered in the bright rays of old Sol, competing in beauty with the dense and exotic shrubbery imported from the quarters of the moon by the legendary King Lunus. The Vinans are making their first trip back, to decide if they can reinhabit their home. The suns have stabilized, and the air is breatheable. They find survivors, whose civilization uses wind powered technology, and to whom the returning Vinans are part of legend. The people live in fear of a "supreme leader." Yoko and Kani follow a robot surveillance plane to a tower, where they discover that robot brains, stored memories of Vinan scientists, that have been running the planet. When they find the "supreme leader" himself, who is supposed to be a Vinan in suspended animation, he turns out to be dead. Yoko destroys the computer which houses his stored, despotic brain, and gives control to the memory box of Kani's father, Sadar, who has been one of the robots for two million years. The managers of his larger conglomerate are ready to swoop in and make things right. Hannard's granddaughter, Madeleine, has other ideas. "I have to pay for the sins of my family," she says. Buying off or coopting the managers, she builds a new town for the workers where decisions and resources are shared. The new town is in domes sealed off from the rest of the world, with fantastic architecture, but no rewards for initiative. Some people from outside are jealous, and some people inside are bored.

"La Poudre aux Yeux" (Giddap Joe) p. 99-130 in Cap'tain Swing, no. 113 (Août 2003). -- Summary: Giddap Joe rides into Axonville, and the town appears deserted. The men of the town are waiting in ambush, however, and Giddap soon has a noose around his neck and is headed for a lynching. Then a little girl, Julie Copping, cries out that Joe is her friend, and the townspeople relent. They had thought that Joe was part of a gang chasing Jim and Rose Copping, Julie's parents. Julie gives Joe the map to her father's gold strike. Joe decides he'd better go help his old friend Jim, so he thanks the townspeople for the loan of the necktie, takes it off, and prepares to leave. Before he can start, Lou Marks knocks him down and steals the map. In flashback, we learn that after Copping found the gold, the crooked sheriff of the town of Garriot has tried to steal his claim. Copping had shot "sheriff" Kaye in the arm, and Copping had spent three years in jail for it. Upon his release, Kaye was waiting with to cronies to continue the pursuit of Copping's gold. In the present, Loe Marks volunteers to join Giddap Joe as he rides out to find the Coppings. Marks is sure that Joe didn't see him when he stole the map. In the mountains, Rose Copping's horse is frightened by a rattlesnake, and she falls to the ground and is threatened by the snake. She wants Jim to shoot the snake, but he is sure that the sound of the shot would bring Kaye and his men straight to them. He lassos the snake neatly around its "neck" and throws it aside. Rose's horse's leg is broken, and Jim won't shoot it for the same reason, but Rose shoots it out of compassion. Sure enough, the couple is captured in a trice and threats to Rose soon elicit another map from Jim. At the entry to the cave where the gold is, Kaye stops and sends one of his men in to check the truth of Copping's story. The man doesn't come out, so Kaye sends another man in. Giddap Joe and Lou Marks (Lou having had a change of heart) were waiting inside the cave and have overpowered the two men. Joe then steps out of the cave and arrests Kaye. -- Call no.: PN6748.C336no.113 ----------------------------------------------------- Townsville.
