"Le Héros Déshonoré" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain Swing, no. 113 (Août 2003). -- Summary: Fort Brix is under siege, and food and ammunition are almost gone. Captain Swing sneaks in through a passageway only he knows, to try to encourage the defenders. Only two more days and reenforcements will arrive. Colonel Hopkins is in despair, though. If the British actually push their advantage the fort won't last two hours. Hopkins wonders how Swing got past the British lines and Swing explains, but somebody overhears. That night a silver platter is thrown out the window of Fort Brix with the details of the secret passage scratched on it. The British sneak in. Only Captain Swing, the Colonel's daughter Vivian, and her fiancé Bertie Wilkins survive. Swing is badly wounded. He tells a general investigating the case that he only told Colonel Hopkins about the passage, and although the Colonel is dead he is disgraced as a traitor. Capt. Swing takes several weeks to recover from his wounds. Then, at an inn, Swing accidentally finds the silver platter because of a confusion of luggage with another guest. The confusion is soon corrected and Swing doesn't know the significance of the platter, but Vivian and Bertie chance to come in as he is holding it. Bertie recognizes it, and since he signed the message with his initials decides that Swing must already know about his treachery. Bertie's efforts to recover the platter are to no avail, of course, because the other customer has it and has gone on his way. Swing is knocked out by a mysterious man searching his room (it was Bertie) and is invited to Vivian's place to recover. Vivian seems to have a slave named Sam, or at least a very obsequious Black servant and cook. Bertie hires a man to kill Swing, and has Mister Bluff (Swing's sidekick) taken hostage. The ransom note demands the silver plate, but Swing doesn't know what that's about. Swing is being held at gunpoint by the kidnappers when Pouik (Bluff's dog) brings him a pistol and joins the fray. Hibou (another sidekick) turns up as well, and Bluff is soon freed. The man with the platter knows its significance, and returns to ask Vivian for 200 guineas to prove her father's innocence. Bertie Wilkins gets to the man first, stabs him, and takes the platter. The man lives long enough to explain it to Vivian and Swing. Swing finds Wilkins trying to bury the platter, and the game is up. The Hopkins name is cleared, and Vivian is single again. -- Call no.: PN6748.C336no.113 ----------------------------------------------------- Sam. The format of this introductory section is illustrated text, with the French and English versions having different illustrations. Part 1: "The Peasant" 74 p. -- Summary: The boy Samaturo is chosen at a young age (in the year 1253) to undergo samurai training. He starts to become famous when at the age of fourteen he defeats a pack of robbers. At the age of 25 he graduates with his friend Yokoryoto, and each finds work with a lord. In time Samaturo comes to Chidori's seaside village looking for her lord Tetsuo. The peasant girl Chidori is frightened of him at first, because there have been pirates raiding the region, and she thinks he may be one of them. The pirates even have a dragon on their side. After some clarification, Chidori and Samaturo part friends. At Tetsuo's house Samaturo says he is looking for his friend Yokoryoto, and indeed Yokoryoto soon arrives, on the point of death and without his swords, because of a run-in with the pirates. Samaturo promises to recover the swords, and asks Lord Tetsuo for permission to tackle the pirates. Fukumatsu, the daughter of Tetsuo and betrothed of Samurai Yokoryoto, doesn't wait for permission and is soon kidnapped by the pirates. With swordsmen and archers, Samaturo follows the trail to a cave, where they encounter the dragon. Samaturo is badly injured, and only survives because he is knocked into a crack in the rock. Chidori recognizes his riderless horse, and it takes her to him. She brings him back to her house for nursing. Part 2: "The Dragon" 74 p. -- Summary: After considerable nursing and intimacy, Samaturo declares his love for Chidori, but he must rescue Fukumatsu, return the swords of Yokoryoto, and take care of the pirates and their dragon. He leaves, promising to return for Chidori. Tetsuo gives him fifty knights, and he returns to the sea to find Chidori's village under attack by the pirates. Samaturo's strategy is good enough to save many of the villagers and rout the pirates, killing their leader who is carrying Yokoryoto's swords. Next he attacks the pirates in their seaside cave, sending a force along the beach from each direction and flushing them out himself by using the cave's back entrance. The pirates flee to their ships, but Fukumatsu is aboard one of them, and Samaturo captures it and frees her. They are ready to let the other ships sail, when they realize the dragon is aboard one of them, and ride their horses into the sea in pursuit. The pirates release the dragon as a delaying action, and the fall into the water stuns it briefly while Samaturo climbs to its head. Slashing and stabbing with his sword, Samaturo kills the dragon. He takes Fukumatsu and the swords back to Lord Tetsuo. Returning to Chidori, he finds her willing to leave with him, and they travel together.
