Thierry Groensteen. p. 60-75 in 9e Art : les Cahiers du
Musée de la Bande Dessinée, no. 2 (Jan. 1997). -- Begins:
-- English summary (from p. 137): "The
History of Mute Comics: The first mute comics appeared in
the 1860s in the satirical German weekly Fliegende Blätter.
Imported to France by Caran d'Ache, the 'pantomimic strip'
was to become characteristic of the Chat Noir school.
Citing authors as different as the Americans A.B. Frost and
Milt Gross, the Britons W. Heath Robinson and Henry M.
Bateman, the German e.o. plauen, and the Spaniard Mihura,
Thierry Groensteen writes the first history of this
narrative art that is so rarely considered in its
specificity, and whose more recent development will be
touched on in the 3rd issue of 9e Art." -- Call no.:

Robinsonia

Robinsonia / Eric Maltaite ; translation by Joe Johnson ; lettering by Ortho. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 2000. -- 53 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (Eurotica) -- Story follows parts of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe; Defoe is depicted as a gay character. -- Call no.: PN6747.M3213R613 1999

Summary: In the 1640s, Robinsonia is tricked onto a ship that supplies "girls" to the British colonies. The ship is boarded by other slavers who take her to a Moorish slave auction. She escapes in a boat with an African woman, and they are picked up by other slavers heading for new world plantations. This third ship is wrecked and only Robinsonia survives, washed up on a tropical island. She builds a home, starts a journal, and studies a book of erotic drawings she has salvaged from the ship. She rescues a "girl Friday" from cannibals who sail over from a neighboring island for a barbecue. Robinsonia would prefer a man, however. Friday helps build a canoe so they can go find some men. The cannibals come back with another victim, Friday's sister, and a sick young white man named Dan. The two women rescue the prisoners, and Friday takes the canoe to take her sister home. Robinsonia stays with Dan to get him back into shape. Dan turns out to be no fun, he's gay, but The Bounty shows up with Captain Bligh a prisoner. Dan and Robinsonia help Bligh re-take the ship. Robinsonia then sails away with all those nice men, and Dan stays behind with her journal, which he eventually edits and publishes under his own name: Daniel Defoe.
