Reflections

Reflections / De Blas - Azpiri. -- Rockville Centre, NY : Heavy Metal, 2000. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- Contents: "The Unicorn's Reflection" p. 3-14 ; "Time and Reflection" p. 15-26 ; "Reflections" p. 27-36 ; "Arabia 1902" p. 37-48. -- These stories appeared in issues of Heavy Metal in 1993 and 1994. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6777.A9R413 2000

"The Unicorn's Reflection" p. 3-14 -- Summary: Kublai has entrusted his granddaughter to Marco Polo for transport to the Khan of Persia. The trip is to take over a year, and the couple begins it in lovemaking. The eager future husband meets them ahead of schedule in India, and takes them on a unicorn hunt with the granddaughter as the necessary virgin. The hunt is successful (it's a rhinoceros) and afterwards she poisons her husband and blames his death on the excesses of the wedding night. This story also appears in Heavy Metal, v. 18, no. 3 (July 1994), p. 34-45.

"Time and Reflection" p. 15-26 -- Summary: Leonardo da Vinci is in Venice working on a weapons contract and living in Marco Polo's former house. In the house is a Chinese mirror, given to Marco by Kublai Khan. Leonardo is plagued by the mirror, as it gives him visions and visitations from former lovers, and concludes there's something evil about it. He stabs himself with a knife on the right side, and because it's reversed the reflection is stabbed in the heart and the mirror shatters. This story also appears in Heavy Metal, v. 30, no. 7 (May 1993), p. 49-60.

"Reflections" p. 27-36 -- Summary: A Spanish conquistador in Peru, Don Alvaro de Roa, is captured and held by rebellious Indians. They feed him well, and let him keep his sword. Each night a different one of four beautiful women comes to him to stay the night, in rotation. After a month he is freed, and asks the old man who was his captor what has happened. It has been revenge, because years ago he participated in a bloodbath, and raped the Virgins of the Sun. The four young women who are now pregnant, are his daughters. Alvaro de Roa is not impressed, kills the old man, and rides away saying he's not worried about Oedipus's problems. This story also appears in Heavy Metal, v. 18, no. 5 (Nov. 1993), p. 42-51.

"Arabia 1902" p. 37-48 -- Summary: Archaeologists find a deep hidden chamber full of statues of tortured women, and dominated by a mysterious mirror. The wife of one of the archaeologists starts having strange dreams in her tent. A sandstorm comes, and the whole crew, with the mirror, takes refuge with the woman in her tent. An orgy begins, and the people disappear into the mirror. This story also appears in Heavy Metal, v. 17, no. 4 (Sept. 1993), p. 52-63, where it is titled "The Mirror : Arabia 1902."

Reform Schools.
   "Fantasma" (Memín) / argumento: Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;
   dibujo, Sixto Valencia B. 32 p. in Memén, no. 16 (1983). --
SUMMARY: Memín explores the reform school where Carlangas
is being held until he finds the right solitary confinement
cell. Carlos is happy to hear that his mother is still
alive, and tells Memín how the warden has whipped him and
locked him up for a crime he didn't commit. Memín is
noticed and taken to the warden, and the warden gets ready
to whip Memín. Memín jumps out the window and hides on the
school grounds. He hears two women talking about a ghost
sighting around the school, and with a sheet and some
stilts he scares the guards enough to make his escape.
Meanwhile Elisa, the nurse who knows Carlos is innocent,
visits Carlos's mother at the Red Cross hospital and brings
her up to date on her son's situation. Carlos's mother
brings up the fact that Carlos's father is rich and
powerful. Since he has never taken the trouble to even ask
about his son, she doesn't want to go to him for help. --

Oda, letterer ; Gene D'Angelo, colorist ; Julius Schwartz,
   editor. 16 p. in Superman, no. 402 (Dec. 1984). -- Summary
(by Mary Walker): Superman has crashed, is crippled and

asking for help, and he thinks that he might be able to
take the man to a nearby shelter when they see a craft
manned by marauders from the future who have sapped
Superman's powers. Justin leads him through the sewers.
Evidently Superman also suffers from paranoia and turns on
Justin who has found refuge for him in the Superman museum.
Justin is saved from the fellow by the real Superman who
