Ramor's Conch

Ramor's Conch / script, Letendre ; art, Loisel. -- New York : Nantier-Beall-Minoustchine, 1987. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (Roxanna & the Quest for the Time Bird ; 1) -- Translation of: La Quête de l'Oiseau du Temps 1: La Conque de Ramor. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.L4R3 1987

Summary: Roxanna's life of adventure is beginning. Her mother, Mara, has given her a message to carry to Bragon the Knight. With a blue familiar called a furry, she gets on a flying beast called a lopwind and heads for Bragon's farm. Roxanna arrives while a beast called a trivulge is attacking a neighbor, and she vanquishes it with her scorching whip. Mara's message tells of an evil god Ramor, who long ago was confined in a conch shell. His confinement is over in nine days, but Mara has found the spell which will tuck him back in. Unfortunately, it takes longer than nine days even to say the incantation. She tells Bragon to get her the shell, then get her something called the Time Bird, which will stop time while she finishes the recitation. Bragon and Roxanna leave right away to get the seashell, which is held by a Prince Shan-Thung. They stop to rest in a cave that is the source of the river Dol, and meet its mad riddling master, Fol, whose riddles must be answered if one is to pass. They proceed to the city of Shan-Thung, where it is the "season of lowly discomforts." This means that all the women are sequestered, and Roxanna has to wear a long coat to prevent rioting among the men. They meet Bulrog, an old student of Bragon's, who is now a mercenary in the service of Shan-Thung. Roxanna causes another mini-riot by taking her coat off, and is sent to be locked up with the other women. Roxanna is rescued by another prisoner, and the three of them grab the conch. Bulrog and his mercenaries almost stop them, but Roxanna gets up on a wall and exposes herself, causing pandemonium that leads to the complete destruction of the city in short order. Roxanna, Bragon and the mystery man, who always keeps his helmet on, get away on a small sailboat, while Bulrog vows vengeance from the rubble.
