undocumented immigrant who cleans up after hours in Joe's

2 (Junio 2001).
-- Abstract: In the first thirteen pages
of a longer essay, Armand Bartra directs a bird's eye view
(a precise, concise, all-encompassing view) of half a
century of Mexican popular graphic narrative. From nineteen
hundred until 1950 the author presents a history of the
first years of Mexican comics, carefully exploring its most
important exponents, as well as comparing it with the
development of the North American comic book of that age.
The decades of the 40's and 50's deserve special attention:
Bartra divides his panoramic analysis between the humorous
comic book corpus and the serious comic book one." --

Iturra. p. 46-50 in La Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios
historia." -- Abstract: Pepo (René Ríos) died in July 2000,
at the age of 88, probably the most prominent Chilean
cartoonist and the most complete Chilean graphic artist of
the 20th century. He was outstanding in political, sports,
adult and children's cartooning, as well as in book
illustrations and advertising. Condorito, his best-known
character, is not his only legacy in the history of Chilean
graphic humor. He also left a very important iconographic

international character in Chilean comics. He is more than
50 years old, and is a representative Chilean icon. Why?
The anthropomorphic representation of the Condor has been
in the collective imagination of Chileans since before the
'discovery' of the New World by the Europeans. This article

-- Summary:
"In this period foreign comic strips were setting the
pattern for Chilean comic book production and the use of
the balloon in panels is hesitantly accepted. The drawing
style is classic, monotonous and of many levels of quality,
but some cartoonists try new ways and some names stand out,
like Jorge Delano, Christie, Core, Percy, Nato, Alhue, and
Pepo. This period of time begins with the arrival of weekly
comics magazines like Don Fausto and goes up to the golden
