Passages

Passages / Andreas ; J.-M. & R. Lofficier, translation ; Karen Casey-Smith, lettering. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1990. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Rork ; 2) -- An album of six sequenced chapters, also bringing the previously unrelated first two chapters of the first album (Fragments) into the continuity. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.A542 R67213 1990

Chapter 1: "Raffington Stevens" 5 p. -- Summary: Stevens is a private eye hired by an anonymous client to find out anything he can about the life and death of Rork. He breaks into Rork's house, meets Rork, and asks questions which are answered in the following chapters. Rork's face is covered by a dark hood, which Stevens assumes is because of disfiguration from the explosion Rork has apparently escaped in New York.

Chapter 2: "The Beginning" 7 p. -- Summary: Rork tells of his adoptive parents, and how at age 10 he had a dream introducing him to another world, and particularly to a teacher named Tanemanar. On waking up after three days, he leaves his parents for Tanemanar, and never sees them again. An evil-looking person, later named "Pharas," appears while villagers are burning down Rork's childhood home, though the parents got safely away. This was 300 years ago.

Chapter 3: "The Great Secret" 7 p. -- Summary: Rork studies for many years with Tanemanar, who is also called The Dream Master, and has one last thing to learn. A message comes from The Captain that it is time, so teacher and pupil journey to a kind of ships' graveyard where Rork rides a giant snail called the Passmaster to a snail cemetery on another planet. This is the great secret: teleportation. Tanemanar warns Rork that he can only do it once more, and then Pharas will show up and make him forget the secret.

Chapter 4: "The Grey Death, part 1" 6 p. -- Summary: Many years after learning the Great Secret, Rork gets a call for help from Bernard Wright, the writer whom he had earlier rescued from destruction by the undersea civilization. Wright has a new house, and before Rork can get to him has been found dead of old age in it. Rork reads what Wright has been typing, and learns that a strange grey dust had taken over the house, trapping Wright and aging him prematurely.

"The Grey Death, part 2" 7 p. -- Summary: Rork finds himself trapped in Wright's house by the grey dust, or something related to it. In a chapter with no dialogue, only one caption, and other words only in monochromatic flashbacks from earlier chapters, Rork has to teleport to get out of the house, and is met immediately after by Pharas, who makes him forget the secret of teleportation.

Chapter 5: "The Answers" 5 p. -- Summary: Rork explains to Stevens that he escaped from the train-and-dynamite death trap by teleporting again, because Pharas only repressed the secret in his mind instead of erasing it. Then he tells how Deliah Darkthorne and Ebenezer Aldridge had set up the trap under the influence of the Stain. Pharas removes the Stain, and Deliah, Ebenezer and Pharas arrive at the house where Rork is narrating.

Chapter 6: "Pharas" 9 p. -- Summary: Pharas enters and makes Rork take off his dark cowl, and other clothing, to reveal that the clothes are empty and that Rork really isn't there. Pharas takes the assembled company into a spherical ship, apparently manned by people from the undersea civilization, and they journey to where Rork can be seen in suspended animation, caught between worlds. Deliah tries to free him with her powers, which Pharas thinks will ruin everything, when suddenly Adam Niels hits the spherical ship with an arrow to its fatal point, and blows it up. Adam has figured out that it was this ship that earlier destroyed his laboratory. Adam reveals that it was he who hired Raffington Stevens. In the confusion, Rork and Deliah have teleported together, but Pharas says they probably didn't arrive anywhere together.
