Summary: A small traveling circus (one wagon, two humans) stops for the night in the mountains of Transvodkanie, hoping to reach a village and make some money the next day. Besides Goldoni, the master of the circus, there is a young woman named Emily, a chimpanzee named Bambou, and a large caged catlike creature that they picked up nearly dead in Siberia. They have nothing to eat, but Emily offers her arm to the Siberian cat so it can drink some of her blood. This upsets Goldoni mightily, but just then wolves attack. Goldoni is killed, and Bambou escapes down the mountain to a village bar where he meets Canardo. From Bambou's description, Canardo recognizes the cat creature as Raspoutine, an evil and powerful monster from an earlier album. Up in the mountains, the wolves have also recognized Raspoutine, and are trying to negotiate an alliance. Raspoutine considers this to be beneath him, but a demon shows up, makes him agree to do it, and tells him he has to use Emily as well. Emily has a gift for numbing minds and making people do what she wants them to. Raspoutine needs more human blood to recover his full powers, so Emily helps him find a victim. Bambou comes along to warn the humans, but too late, and he is mortally wounded by the misunderstanding humans. Canardo is with him when he dies, and Emily soon arrives on the scene with Raspoutine. Emily tells Raspoutine that Canardo isn't worth killing. In the weeks that follow Raspoutine causes a "river of hemoglobin and terror" in the region. The demon returns and protests that it's too much, but Raspoutine laughs at him. Emily, though, suggests that since he's only been drinking the blood of women, he isn't getting as much vigor out of the act as he would if he were to drink the blood of men. Raspoutine wants to know why she hates humans so much, given that she is one, and she says she isn't one. Canardo is not too concerned about the death and uproar among the humans, but when they start to kill innocents of his kind (talking animals) in an effort to kill the monster, he decides to go after Raspoutine. He finds the ruined castle where Raspoutine and Emily are hiding, kills the wolves that are guarding the place, and starts a game of Russian roulette with Raspoutine. Emily interrupts to stop her protector from killing himself, then has a mental breakdown, demonstrates her power to kill at a distance with a gesture, then falls asleep. Raspoutine says she always falls asleep suddenly, without warning. Humans surround the ruins. In the morning Raspoutine decides to go out and face the men with guns, but Emily wakes up and chases the men away with her power. Emily decides to have a party, and Raspoutine and Canardo suddenly realize they're not main characters in the story. Meanwhile the humans discover Emily's back story, how she was found growing from an apparent egg planted in a woman who died; was raised in secret by a professor and his wife; and lived the life of an object of scientific investigation, lately confined to a hospital. One time she escaped and it cost the army 15 men and two helicopters to get her back. Emily, it seems, is an extra-terrestrial. Emily starts her party, with the armed humans again surrounding the ruin. Emily's adopted father arrives to prevent a massacre. Emily drugs Canardo so he'll sleep, then calls Raspoutine to her bed for a wedding night. In the morning she leaves Raspoutine sleeping, says goodbye to Canardo, and goes out to find the kindly professor waiting for her alone. He wants to take her back to the hospital, but she doesn't like that ending. She is no longer alone, she's pregnant, so she kills him. |

NogegoNNogegoN / Luc & François Schuiten ; translation by Julia Solis ; lettering, Kitof & Loac. -- Hollywood, CA : Humanoids Publishing, 2000. -- 1 v. : col. ill. ; 32 cm. -- (The Hollow Grounds) -- Translation of: Les Terres Creuses: NogegoN (1990). -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.S353T513 2000Note: A "palindromatic" story, in that a symmetry of events is maintained around a central climactic opening. The pagination reverses at that point, and the page layouts and major visual features of the setting are repeated on complementary pages. For example, page 8' near the end has a panel layout exactly the same as page 8 near the beginning, but inverted. The backgrounds are substantially the same, though one of the characters is different. Summary: A young woman named Nelle arrives on the planet NogegoN looking for her missing friend Olive. The planet has very low gravity, and most travel is done by jumping from place to place. Olive (or Olivilo as she was called on NogegoN to meet the requirements of symmetry) had been living with a sculptor named Natan, who makes sculptures by having models jump through vaporized stone. They fought and she left. Nelle dislikes Natan immediately and destroys all the statues made with Olivilo. Soon, however, as Nellen, she is making new statues and feeling attracted to Natan. Nellen makes several symmetrical trips to public records offices for information about Olivilo, and to establish her own identity. She has conversations with an archivist, and ruminates by herself, about the doctrines and values of a symmetry-based society. At the end Nelle discovers that Olive has left the planet, and Nelle leaves as well.

As a youth he arrived at the Nohope school with a class of other prospects, and was severely tested. He showed himself to be superior individually, and also endowed with team spirit. The class receives brain implants, and Albino's implant brings out a virtual evil twin that he must struggle against, in deciding whether his goal in creating games will be noble or mercenary. Meanwhile Ulritch the Red is looting and pillaging with the ship he stole from Panepha, with Panepha as his unwilling concubine. A tournament is held for the hand of their daughter, Onyx, and while it is going on Panepha frees Thark the Gray, the father of Almagro, her favorite son. Thark overthrows Ulritch, and allows Panepha to castrate him as her planned revenge, but then makes her his concubine. Ulritch kills himself, and Panepha begins plotting against Thark. Albino conquers his evil half, and sends Tinigrifi into virtual space to contact Saint Severo de Loyola again. The rest of the galaxy realizes that what is happening is a threat to the stability of its systems, and arrives to surround the Nohope school with warships. The Saint is pleased, however, and gets Albino promoted with honors. Albino leaves for the Games Planet.
