The Moon ChildThe Moon Child / by Jean Claude Forest ; edited by Sean Kelly ; translated by Valerie Marchant. -- New York : Heavy Metal Communications, 1978. -- 51 p. : ill. ; 32 cm. -- (Barbarella) -- Begins with an eight page summary of the adventures of Barbarella in comics and film, including a description of an album that appeared in French between the two albums that we have seen in English. -- "The Moon Child" originally appeared in English in six consecutive issues of Heavy Metal, v. 1, no. 11 (Feb. 1978) to v. 2, no. 3 (July 1978). -- Genres: Science fiction, erotic. -- Call no.: PN6747.F64 M613 1978Summary: In a nightmare, Barbarella arrives at a laboratory where a cosmonaut named Browningwell is in a box in a kind of artificial sleep. Scientists recruit Barbarella to join him in his dream, in a separate box, with the goal of waking him up to find out what great secret he may be hiding. When she encouters him, he is working on a masterpiece. By way of explanation, he says that "the race which people called 'French' has become the master race, and masterpices are henceforth on a cosmic scale!" In other words, he's a freedom-fighter building a planet for the Brotherhood of the Children of the Cosmos, in competition with the evil Nevil Level of the Universal Workers' Guild, who is building a cosmic cathedralbank that produces artificial gold. The prize is a planetary system. Browningwell's masterpiece is being assembled in a workshop, but a machine embodying the Thingimibob Transfer Principle projects whatever Browningwell makes to a million times its size out in space. Nevil Level's brother Charlie Chisel attacks and damages Browningwell's masterpiece, and all seems lost. Then, with Barbarella as his inspiration, Browningwell starts working furiously again. She is resentful of her treatment by the Brotherhood, which does not consider women as creative, and asks for a vacation of 300 days on the fertility planet Gyn-Gyn, seducing Browningwell vigorously on the trip there. After 300 days he returns to find they have a son, whom they name Little Foxy. Returning to the workshop, she finds he is making a new masterpiece, a Barbarelliform moon holding a shining globe, which he calls "Science Lighting the World." Barbarella isn't quite happy that the giant effigy shows her naked and on her back, but that's art for you. News comes that Nevil Level's masterpiece is almost done, so Browningwell goes to a universe where time passes slower to finish. They return a few hours later, on Little Foxy's fourth birthday, with a complete model of the moon ready for the Thingimibob Transfer. The Council of the Brotherhood, pushed by a silversmith named Spoonlove, decides it isn't quite enough and without Browningwell's knowledge starts a process whereby the moon will become living flesh, and Barbarella will become a statue. Barbarella soon loses her senses of smell and hearing. Browningwell blows a hole in the model to stop them. Little Foxy, trying to get help for his mother, crawls into the hole and gets transferred to the real moon. Spoonlove is revealed as an agent provocateur (the cathedral bank can't really produce artificial gold) and what's more, he's Nevil Level himself. A dash into space to rescue Little Foxy starts a battle with ray guns all over and around the naked, semi-alive, moon-sized body of Barbarella. When Nevil Level and his cronies are all dead, Barbarella and Browningwell wake in their boxes and realize it was all a dream. Then they go out of the laboratory and find Little Foxy telling his friends about them.
