The Magician's Wife / Jerome Charyn and François Boucq. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1987. -- 87 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- Translation of: La Femme du Magicien. -- The story is preceded by "A Note to the American Reader," by the writer Jerome Charyn (2 pages). -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.C47F413 1987

Chapter 1: p. 9-28 -- Summary: The story begins in Saratoga Springs, in 1956. Rita's mother is the maid in the household of the magician Edmund and his grandmother. Rita is a young girl, and has a fantasy life complicated by Edmund's illusions and claims that he will marry her one day. Meanwhile he's having an affair with Rita's mother. Within a few years we see the three of them doing magic shows on stage in Moscow, and Paris. Rita's mother ages and is phased out of the show, while Rita grows up, becomes more attractive and begins to bear the brunt of Edmund's exploitative on-stage hypnotic acts. In London in 1963, Rita becomes a werewolf on stage and almost kills Edmund.

Chapter 2: p. 33-46 -- Summary: Rita and Edmund are married in Munich in 1967. Edmund tries to get Rita's mother to leave them, but Rita won't allow it. The mother soon dies, and Rita blames Edmund and leaves the act. Several months later she has a job at a diner in New York. Some tough guys try to assault her in Central Park. She fights them off, but she knows they're customers at the diner. Among the customers, also, is a big Vietnam veteran with a hook for a hand, who feels protective toward Rita.

Chapter 3: p. 51-72 -- Summary: Rita keeps returning to Central Park in the moonlight, and soon a serial killer who rips men open like a werewolf is reported. A visiting French detective named Verbone takes the case, and ties the killings in with Rita. He visits the diner, and Rita's apartment, and then waits for her in Central Park. She calls him Edmund, and he goes along with it, when suddenly the Vietnam veteran jumps him and slashes him with his hook. The police are waiting, and Verbone survives, though severely injured.

Chapter 4: p. 77-88 -- Summary: Returning to Edmund's house in Saratoga Springs in 1973, Rita finds it grown over and deserted, except for a dozen retired jockeys, with Edmund as their servant, and a woman in a nurse's uniform named Dolores. Dolores has Edmund in her power, and he says that without Rita he's only a trickster. Rita gives him his magic back and they leave the place in flames. It seems that all of Rita's childhood fantasy characters leave with them in the firelit night.

Summary: In Magnesia Pamberbilt's attic, Walter Melon discovers a letter from Magnesia's aunt which says she has inherited a mine discovered by her uncle and his colleague, Colorado Jules, in faraway Messaplato. A large diamond falls from the binding of the book, so they assume it is a diamond mine. Soon Magnesia is packed for an expedition, and she sends Walter home to get a toothbrush. By the time Walter gets to the airport Magnesia has left for South America, so he follows on a later flight. He makes contact with an old friend of his father's, Arthur the Duke of Booswallow, who offers to help. Soon at least two parties have heard about the diamond mine and are following Walter and Arthur. Arthur knows the route Magnesia must have taken, and they leave in Arthur's jeep. They are rescued from a river by the Kilikilibambas, who sell them a canoe. They come upon a band of Arribista revolutionaries, which confiscates the canoe. They figure Magnesia is likely to be with the government guerrillas, so they escape through the jungle to the other camp. At this point the secret police, the Kilikilibambas, the Arribistas, and a mystery man are all following Walter and Arthur. Arriving in the government camp, they find that Magnesia has taken charge and is making all the soldiers dig for diamonds. While the soldiers dig, all parties contest ownership at gunpoint, poison arrow-point, machete-point, etc. The mystery man proves to be Colorado Jules, one of the original discoverers of the mine, who has been afflicted with partial amnesia. The soldiers finally find something, and a defacto truce occurs while everybody starts digging. Walter's father arrives in a helicopter with a bomb, and breaks up the party. It is discovered that the mine contains not diamonds, but truffles, and an impromptu corporation is formed. One third of the profit goes to the Arribistas, one third to the Kilikilibambas, one third to the military, one third to Colorado Jules, and one third to Magnesia Pamperbilt.
