Summary: The setting is colonial New England, with
Hawthorne's Salem witch trials and Scarlet Letter as
background. The story begins with a wordless sequence of
nine pages in which a blonde girl is chased and raped on a
beach by two Indian boys. The boys then go for a swim,
leaving the girl alone. A young European man kills both
Indians, scalps them, and gives the scalps to the girl. She
bursts into tears and he clouts her and takes her home. The
dialogue begins and we learn that Abner Lewis considers
himself as having rescued Shevah, the niece of the Puritan
minister Reverend Black. The Indian boys were neighbors, of
a tribe that has always sheltered and been friendly with
the Lewises. Abner's mother, Abigail, sends him for his
brothers, Elijah and Jeremy, and his sister Phyllis, and
together they get Shevah calmed down. Meanwhile soldiers
from the nearby village of New Canaan start looking for
Shevah at her uncle's request, and come upon several Indian
men on the beach who of just discovered the dead boys.
Together they find Shevah's clothes. After the soldiers
leave, the Indians figure out that the Lewises are
involved. The youngest boy, Jeremy, is sent to New Canaan
to tell them that Shevah is safe with them. Reverend Black
insists on going to get her immediately, and calls the
Lewises the "sons of Satan" and "witches." There is a back
story. Mrs. Lewis wears a brand on her face put there years
before by Black's father, who abused her sexually for
years. The son and current Reverend Black took up the
abuse, until she fled to the Indians who helped build her
house. Elijah, her oldest son by a French soldier, was born
soon after. Reverend Black then took her up again, and
fathered her second son Abner, who is considered a little
crazy. The younger Reverend Black is the father of Phyllis,
and Jeremy was found on the doorstep. While the Reverend is
at the cabin with a few soldiers, the Indians attack and
are driven off when the rest of the soldiers arrive. When
they've left, Abner announces that he is attracted to
Shevah, and is going to go find her. The rest of the family
decides to go to New Canaan as well, as they are expecting
the Indians to return for them. In New Canaan, the wounded
Reverend demands that his niece join him in his bath for
sex, and demands the details of the rape. The Lewises
arrive just before the Indians attack the village. The
village is wiped out, though the Lewises are spared, except
for Phyllis who is killed bringing gunpowder to the men.
An Indian friend sees Abner kill Reverend Black, and
presents Abner with Black's scalp. A four-page postscript
by Hugo Pratt historicizes the story somewhat, with
bibliographical references and particular homage to James
Oliver Curwood.

Summary: Arriving in Calcutta by train, Indy reports to
a colonial
policeman
named Blake that a traveling companion was attacked by
thugs, and he saved her. She is a
dancer, named
Kamala. Indy meets up with
reporter Marya
Smirnova, who tells him she has information about a lost
temple. That night they go to Kamala's performance, and
while they're walking her to the hotel she is kidnapped by
Thugs. Indy tells the story of the Thugs, a
cult of Kali
now apparently revived after a century of dormancy. When
Indy and Marya arrive at Bhubaneshwar to look for the
temple and Kamala, Marya is met at the train by the
Rolls-Royce of the Maharajah, who turns out to be an old
chum of Marya's named Sardar. They are invited to be guests
at his palace. That evening just outside the palace they
hear a speech by
Mahatma Gandhi,
who is organizing to resist the British government. On a
tiger hunt the next day Jones falls off his elephant, kills
a tiger right away, and finds that the tiger was guarding a
cave leading
to the temple. That night Indy and Marya sneak in and see
Kamala in
chains, and
hear the announcement of her sacrifice to Kali the next
day. On the way out they lose their way and find a cave of
lepers, who try to escape, but Indy locks them back in.
Next day Marya figures out that Sardar is the chief of the
Thugs, and that night they sneak into the temple
ceremony in
disguise.
Kamala is made to dance before her death, and Indy grabs
her just in time, while Marya grabs a big ruby from Kali's
statue.
They discover that the colonial policeman from Calcutta is
one of the Thugs. To help them in their escape, Indy
releases the lepers. Once outside the cave, Kamala grabs
the ruby and throws it back in, whereupon the cave
collapses. She explains that she is a
priestess of
Kali, chosen since birth by the Thugs for this sacrifice.
She had tried to flee, but the policeman, Blake, brought
her back. Blake, the son of an English man and an Indian
woman, felt rejected by both communities and revived the
Thugs as revenge to start an uprising against the British
and to sabotage Gandhi's movement.

fiction, fantasy, detective fiction, and filmscripts. This
library has not been on the "popular culture studies" track
and prefers to emphasize a "folklore" orientation which
includes important fairy tale collections
