"Fin de Fiesta : Gloria y Declive de una Historieta

Tumultuaria ; 2) / Armando Bartra. p. 147-166 in La Revista
empresa editorial mexicana." -- Abstract: Midway through
the 20th century, the people of Mexico became a society of
readers, readers of comics ("pepines"), but readers
nonetheless. Armando Bartra's article relates the changes
in the Mexican comics industry, with anthology comics
becoming single story and character books, and storytelling
changing to "to be continued" stories. If the comics of the
previous decade had achieved their mass audience, it is in
the 50's that they reached their maximum splendor. Mexican
comics progress through those years from an ephemeral
beginning to biographies of celebrities and religious
figures. Modernity arrives in Mexico in the 60s with titles
like Kalimán, Libro Vaquero, Lágrimas, Risas y Amor, Los
Supermachos de Rius, Chanoc, etc. Mexican comics continue
to develop in this way until the 80's when the independent
publishers appear. -- Abstracts as printed with the
article, with some editing of the English. -- Illustrated.
