Feminax & WalküraxFeminax & Walkürax / Text und Zeichnung von Becker. -- Köln : Emma-Verlag, 1992. -- Call no.: PN6757.B4F4 1992Summary: The year is 38 B.C. The title characters are a large and small pair of women much in the style of Asterix and Obelix. On a cliff across the Rhine from what will be the modern city of Coblenz sits a small but very independent village of women. The west bank is controlled by invading Romans, and the east bank, except for the women's village, is peopled by patriarchal Germanic tribes. The characters are introduced on an early Spring day, each with attendant feminist and anachronistic gags, many depending on at least some acquaintance with the Asterix series. The Romans attack in a boat and the women joyfully reenact the legend of the Lorelei, luring the boat to destruction at the foot of their cliff. Next the village mobilizes for a childbirth, except for their Druid, Abrakadabrax, who faints. A new day, and the scientist Experimentax successfully flies a glider off the cliff and makes it back safely. A band of male hunters spots the "giant bird," and sees it landing at the women's village. One of their number, by the name of Herrjeminix, is assigned the job of learning the secret of the giant bird. Herrjeminix gets himself captured the next day when the women go out hunting for temporary husbands, and he refuses to perform in bed until he learns the secret of the glider. That done, he steals the plans and escapes. Soon the men have built a flying machine, but they can't make it fly. While the women are having a meeting to decide how to get the plans back, the children of the village seize the opportunity to have some fun. They "borrow" the village's magical tarn helment, which makes them invisible, and go on a rampage of practical jokes. Two men who are spying on the village figure it out and steal the helmet from the kids, then complete their mission. The mission was to kidnap Experimentax for her technical expertise. Actually, because she had been wearing the scientist's helmet, they kidnap Oropax, an elder who enjoys the adventure. Using a chief's ring from Loreley's jewelry collection, and after Feminax has had some of the Druid's magic potion, Feminax and Walkürax set out to rescue Oropax. After they leave, all the domestic animals of the village get together and decide to return to the wild, which they do, though finding it a bit scary. In the men's village Oropax convinces the men that they don't need a flying machine because she can brew them a drink that will give them the power to fly without one. Sure enough, before long the men are running around naked, flapping their arms and jumping out of trees. This catches the attention of Feminax and Walkürax, who are thus easily able to locate and rescue Oropax and retrieve the plans. Soon the women are having a festival, when the German and the Roman men both attack. With the help of some extra-strong magic potion and the return of the animals, the German men are easily routed. Feminax uses the flying machine to drop itching powder on the advancing Romans. The defeated men return to their respective camps to rationalize the defeat, and the women have a celebratory banquet. |
