Fable of Venice

Fable of Venice / Hugo Pratt ; translation by Elizabeth Bell ; lettering by Rachael Rodrigo. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1990. -- 75 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Corto Maltese ; 8) -- Translated from the French Fable de Venise. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6768.C6F313 1990

"A Venetian Grandmother" p. 6-14. -- Summary: An introduction by Pratt which attempts to familiarize the reader with Jewish Venice before and between the world wars, and shows photographs of the carved stone symbols and figures that appear in the story.

Chapter 1: "The Lodge of Hermes" p. 16-31. -- Summary: While pretending to escape pursuers, Corto Maltese falls through the ceiling of a Masonic Temple during a meeting, and is soon friendly with one of the masons, named Bepi Faliero. Corto is looking for an emerald, a "clavicle of Solomon," that has been missing for 1,000 years or so. Bepi gets Corto invited to a meeting at the home of a woman named Hipazia, a kind of social and intellectual leader of Venice, and there gets some suggestions for his quest.

Chapter 2: "The Baron Corvo Enigma" p. 32-45. -- Summary: Baron Corvo, a British writer who died in 1913, sent Corto Maltese a riddle before he died. The riddle leads to runic writing carved in an ancient Greek stone lion, and to Arabic writing on a funeral stone that is supposed to date from before Arabic writing. Trying to get a look at Baron Corvo's diaries, Corto Maltese gets involved in a gunfight.

Chapter 3: "The Stairway of Encounters" p. 46-60. -- Summary: Corto is grazed by a bullet and falls from a roof. He is unconscious for three days, and has wild dreams. Upon his recovery, he goes back to the masons for more discussion of his quest and to warn them that one of their number may be working against them.

Chapter 4: "The Revelations of Saint Mark" p. 62-75. -- Summary: Bepi Faliero, wearing his masonic robes, tries to kill Corto Maltese. Bepi dies in the encounter but before he dies he reveals that he was also searching for the emerald. Having figured out where it should be, Corto finds only a letter from Baron Corvo in the hiding place. Soon most of the characters are dead, but Corto reunites them in a dream-like sequence in which he finds the emerald in his own pocket. He then knocks at a door and asks to leave the story and get into another one somewhere else.
