Summary: Caleb Geko is a "mincar," or mind carrier, a specialized courier who carries data in his brain. His job, for a boss named Serif Tazerbo, is to carry a big load across the precinct border. In preparation, Geko loads most of his personal data into a memorypad, for later recovery. Memories of his best friend Eden, a transvestite bar owner, and his ex-lover Alison, whom he has been stalking, are gone for the duration of the job. The information is loaded successfully by a Dr. Kallirachi. Geko is stopped going through customs, and challenged by Inspector Barnstable to a cyberspace duel, called the Velikie-Forbach Test. Geko kills the inspector and so is allowed to pass and complete his mission. Back in his own precinct, he finds out the job has been set up by Alison's wealthy and jealous new partner, Zeck D'Ambrosio. D'Ambrosio proceeds to destroy the memorypad. Geko survives, though almost without memory, and gets to Eden's place because of a business card he has and shows to a cab driver. Geko only remembers D'Ambrosio, and decides to get revenge. It's bloody because D'Ambrosio is surrounded by trained killers. At the end Alison saves Geko's life by killing D'Ambrosio. Geko knows she must have been important to him once, because he has a snapshot of them together, but now there has been too much blood shed, and he walks away.

Pharas takes the assembled company into a spherical ship, apparently manned by people from the undersea civilization, and they journey to where Rork can be seen in suspended animation, caught between worlds. Deliah tries to free him with her powers, which Pharas thinks will ruin everything, when suddenly Adam Niels hits the spherical ship with an arrow to its fatal point, and blows it up. The effort is being coordinated by Deliah Darkthorne, or Low Valley as she now prefers to be called. Low has aged 40 years in the year and a half since teleporting at the end of the Passages album. She is the one who sent the note summoning Rork. Low doesn't understand what the "event" is going to be, only that a beam of light will come down from the sky and that it will have transformational powers. Low has placed experiments in the path of the beam, like a mouse, a cactus, and an apple. The beam comes, and things change, but the results aren't very comprehensible. Low takes Rork to another room and shows him her daughter, Sy-Ra, who is floating in the air stuck between worlds as Rork was near the end of "Passages." Low wants Rork to take Sy-Ra to an astrologer to get her fixed up, and Rork agrees. Then Low eats the apple from the beam experiment, and seems to gain a new sense of well-being and extended perceptions. She tells Rork they'll meet again in nine months, at his house. -- Call no.: PN6747.A542G713 1990 ----------------------------------------------------- Darktown.
