-- (49-956 ou la Démoralisation de la Jeunesse : les 50 Ans

142): "When Comics Corrupted the Souls of Children. From
the beginning of the century, French educators have
denounced the way in which comics distract children from
'real' reading. The image came to be seen as the root of
all ills. Vulgar, ugly, violent, even pornographic, and
confusing imagination with reality. Thierry Groensteen
recalls the vigour of this crusade against comics, which
was to culminate, in 1949, in the voting of a law (no.
49-956) that allows censorship of children's publications."

Summary: A horror rock star named Tadeusz, a virtual personality but controlled by a real person, has inspired a fan club, the Vampyr Ensemble. Mina Harker, who has moved to Earth from Melpomene, joins the club and falls out of touch with her friend, Lucy Seward. Lucy has been having dreams about Mina, and contacts Nathan Never asking for help locating her. The club is headed by a man named Santo, who buys pirated chips from a man named Speedo, so that they can hook into the net for Tadeusz's concerts. The group parks its van in an out-of-the-way place and plugs in. Tadeusz seems to use the horror in their own lives in his songs, and for some it's irresistible. Mina stays with the club until she sees them murder two policemen. The murdered men seem to be present at Tadeusz's next concert, and the club has a bad feeling about it and a falling out. Mina leaves, and Santo joins her in a few days. Mina then finds the rest of the club dead in the back of Santos's van, and calls Lucy. Nobody knows who Tadeusz really is, but Santo figures it out and pays a visit to find out what the secret of his power is. Tadeusz doesn't seem to really know, so Santo figures he can find the secret in the software, perhaps a virus in the pirated chips. He tries to kill Tadeusz, but Nathan arrives and stops him. Santo soon dies in prison, and Tadeusz keeps writing songs but they're not as popular. The earlier feedback from the listeners isn't there anymore. Lucy has been telling the story in retrospect from Mina's diary, and from her own diary, with occasional references to their encounter with Vlad Schreck on their home planet of Melpomene (seen in Nathan Never 1).
