Summary: On November 4, 1911, a pterodactyl egg in a Paris museum hatches. A man named Philippe Boutardieu in Lyon seems to be controlling the pterodactyl as it flies. Soon the police of Paris are dealing with mysterious sightings, then with a rash of killings by the flying dinosaur. The populace is in a panic, and an American banker offers a prize for killing it. On November 15, police inspector Léonce Caponi is assigned to the case. On a train from Dijon to Paris, Antoine Zborowsky meets a woman named Edith Rabatjoie, who says she's going to hunt the pterodactyl. Two days later Zborowsky is at his job in the museum when the empty egg is discovered. Soon another victim is found, and a witness photographs the pterodactyl. In Lyon, Boutardieu is worried by the casualty count and sends his friend Espérandieu to Paris to explain the situation to the head of the museum. Particularly worrisome is the fact that the pterodactyl in the picture is not the one Boutardieu is in partial control of. Zborowsky writes to the woman he met on the train, asking her to meet him at the museum to learn about the pterodactyl. She goes, hoping to put an end to his interest in her. While she's gone her two bodyguards, Albert and Joseph, learn the identity of the most recent victim: August Rabatjoie, brother of Edith Rabatjoie. Edith is not the woman from the train, however, as Zborowsky has been led to believe. Edith is actually being held prisoner by Albert, Joseph, and Adele Blanc-Sec. Adele had used Edith's name just that once on the train. At the museum, someone tries to kill Adele, but Espérandieu saves her. When Adele gets home, Albert has knocked Joseph out and fled with Edith. Adele gets a call from the man who tried to kill her at the museum. He says he's working with Albert, and threatens to take the story to the newspapers unless she meets with Zborowsky that night. At the meeting eight people are present on the museum grounds in Thompson and Thomson disguises, most hiding from each other, and waiting for the pterodactyl to show up. Someone shoots at Adele and misses. Someone else wounds the first shooter, who is then taken aloft by the pterodactyl. A big game hunter kills the pterodactyl with his rifle, and the first shooter falls from the sky dead while Boutardieu in Lyon also dies. The museum director is enraged about the loss to science and threateans the hunter, and Inspector Caponi steps in. The man, now dead, who shot at Adele is identified as a gangster named Eugène Lobel, the same man who tried earlier to kill her. Police Commissioner Dugommier congratulates Caponi on ending the pterodactyl menace. On December 3, Lucien Ripol is about to be executed for murder when a pterodactyl swoops out of the sky and takes him away. Ripol and Lobel had been partners in killing a banker named Mignonneau, but only Ripol had been caught. The next day Adele and Ripol meet at the museum to get the loot from the Mignonneau job. Edith and Albert have been following and step in to take the loot. Albert says he had been working for Lobel all the time. Ripol attacks Albert and gets shot. We learn that Albert was supposed to help catch the killer of Edith's brother Auguste, but that it's too late because Lobel did it. Albert reveals that it was Edith, in a flying machine built by her father, who rescued Ripol from execution. As Albert is leaving with the loot, Joseph appears and shoots him. Joseph leaves with the loot. Adele escapes the arriving police with the help of a motorist named Simon Flageolet, who wants help finding a certain item in Ripol's loot.

-- Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International,
1982. -- 21 cm. -- There is no abstract, but this is a
summarizing passage from leaves 24-25: "The three main
themes in the Superman myth are his origin, his superhuman
qualities, and his dual identity as Clark Kent. The origin
or rebirth and freedom from the mother are in the
background and the main dynamism in the myth is the
Adlerian 'will to power.' Superman is the flying, potent
phallic man who has no need of women, yet women (like Lois
Lane) fall at his feet. This points to the latency
reaction-formation of denying sensuality, and is tinged
with revenge for the mother's Oedipal rejection. Socially,
Superman puts his omnipotence in the service of law and
order, or the collective Superego. Id urges as personified
in psychopaths and criminals are mastered. Love and
approval from society is the reward. The socialization is
further manifested in the duality with Clark Kent. Clark
Kent embodies the feeling of powerlessness and inferiority
of the Oedipal and latency child who in transforming to
Superman is magically reborn as the most socially powerful
adult." -- Chapter 3 compares 10 Superman stories from the

Summary: Joe Carpenter is a bank robber enjoying life in an oceanside paradise in Mexico with Dolores, when a bounty hunter comes for him. The bounty hunter is his wife Mary, who not only wants the $5,000 reward and the loot he stashed, but also a divorce after waiting in jail for him for five years. This is all news to Dolores, whom Mary leaves tied up and hanging upside-down. Dolores swears to get them, and with her three robber brothers is soon on their trail. Mary is also being trailed by Terco, a gringo lawman who can't officially go to Mexico but is lurking in the shadows. The first encounter ends with all three brothers dead, and both women badly wounded at each other's hands. Joe decides to take Mary to the border for a doctor, and leaves Dolores in the desert. Terco tells Joe's whole story to Dolores, and makes her dig her own grave. On the way to the border, Joe tells Mary how he disguised himself as the nephew of a prospector and deposited the loot in another bank, and is still carrying the receipt. Across the border, Mary changes her mind, takes a shot at Terco in the shadows, and together Joe and Mary make a run for the bank that has their gold. It wasn't really Terco in the shadows, though. It was Dolores, who got rid of Terco back in Mexico. Now she's really angry. Even with the receipt, it turns out that Joe and Mary have to withdraw at gunpoint like in the old days, and they manage to get quite a bit more gold that way. They are interrupted by a gang of lawmen, but Dolores shows up with a gatling gun and kills them all. She makes Joe drop his gun, but lets Mary keep hers. Dolores and Mary shoot it out on main street, and almost kill each other. At the end they're all in Mexico, at Dolores' place. The women are covered with bandages playing a friendly game of poker, while Joe makes them dinner.

"For years, Scarface has been one of the most brutal
mobsters in the Gotham City underworld. But he is a
different sort of wiseguy, unique among the criminal
community. You see, Scarface is a ventriloquist's dummy,
the mannequin mouthpiece of mild-mannered Arnold Wesker. It
is believed that Scarface's savagery and disregard for
human life is merely a sympton of Wesker's fractured
psyche. But what if that outlet were removed from the
ventriloquist's possession? What if the puppet were buried

artists, Kurt Schaffenberger & Dave Hunt ; letterer, Milt
Snapinn ; colorist, Gene D'Angelo ; editor, Julius
   Schwartz. 8 p. in Superman, no. 409 (July 1985). -- SUMMARY
(by Mary Walker): Opens in Australia where Superman stops a
brush fire, saving a kangaroo, thinking that his work is
never done. Flying over the sea he appreciates the beauty,
then finds ocean creatures dying from a toxic spill from a
World War II freighter. He picks up the ship thinking that
though he vowed not to interfere in conflicts between
nations he can't leave this alone (note the conflict has
been over for 40 years!). 'With everything else that needs
to be done in the world, why should I have to protect Earth
from its own inhabitants?' He is conflicted about not
having enough time either as Superman or as Clark Kent.
He'd like to do small acts of kindness like blowing down
acorns for hungry squirrels. He thinks Lana should have
more time with him as Clark. Getting back in time to anchor
the news, an admiring technician gives him perspective, and
he feels better about his lives. -- Call no.:
