Diane Wakoski was born in Whittier, California and educated at the University of California, Berkeley. She has published 20 full length collections of poems and her poetry has appeared in literally hundreds of broadsides, limited special editions, anthologies, and journals. Wakoski was honored with the William Carlos Williams Prize for Emerald Ice: Selected Poems, 1962-1987 (Black Sparrow Press), in addition to numerous other awards including a Guggenheim Foundation grant, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and a Fulbright grant. She has also been named a university distinguished professor in the Department of English at Michigan State University, where she has been writer in residence since 1976. In 2003, Wakoski received the 13th annual Michigan Author Award, which honors a Michigan writer for contributions to literature. This award is sponsored jointly by the Michigan Center for the Book and the Michigan Library Association.
