Dan Gerber was born and grew up in western Michigan. He earned his B.A. in English from MSU in 1962. He is a poet, novelist, and essayist whose work includes The Revenant (1971), American Atlas (1973), Grass Fires (1987), A Voice From the River (1990), A Last Bridge Home (1992), and Trying To Catch the Horses (1999). His poems and stories have appeared in The Nation, The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, New Letters, and The Georgia Review. From 1968 through 1972, with Jim Harrison, he co-edited the literary magazine Sumac.
He has traveled extensively as a journalist, particularly in Africa. He has been writer-in-residence at Michigan State University and Grand Valley State University and has lectured, read, and taught at numerous colleges, universities, libraries, schools, and museums throughout the United States and England. He has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, won the 1992 Michigan Author Award, and has had work selected for The Best American Poetry 1999. Mr. Gerber recently loaned his personal papers and manuscripts to Special Collections where they are currently being organized for use. He and his family divide their year between central California and southeastern Idaho.
