MS 70

MAURICE MARTIN DE RYCK
CONGO COLLECTION
8 boxes (210 folders)

Scope and content:  This collection is part of the private library of de Ryck, which was acquired during the 1960s.  The notes, newspaper clippings and other ephemera gathered by de Ryck were organized into this Congo Collection.  For further details, see: Honoré Vinck, "Les papiers de Ryck," History in Africa, 21 (1994): 441-46.  See also the related "Zaire Colonial Documents" on microfilm.  The printed books, journals and offprints were added to MSU's Main Collection or the Area Files of the International (later Africana) Library.

This inventory replaces a 5-page list produced in October 1970 by MSU's International Library.  Except for storing the folders into 8 boxes (27 x 42 x 33 cm.), there are few changes from the 1970 arrangement into broad subject categories.  Each folder is labeled "Ryck, Maurice Martin de/Congo Collection." and some have the note "Clipped, pasted, annotated, at MSU."   Some folders are bound scrapbooks of clippings, while others have several internal divisions.
