Contents: Collection of Webster family correspondence totaling
59 letters, dating from May 1925 to December 1945. The collection includes letters written by the Webster sisters
living and working is East Africa to their other sisters in England. Jessie Webster writes from Nairobi and
Mombasa, Kenya, where she works with the Old East African Trading Company,
among other shipping companies and businesses.
Queenie writes from Johannesburg, and Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia,
where she and her husband and children are located. Peggy and Marjorie both write from England, Peggy from Norfolk
and Marjorie from St. Ives, Hunts, where they live with their families.
The
letters, arranged in chronological order, contain various descriptions of home
and work in East Africa, as well as some firsthand accounts of the landscape,
social and political events of the regions, and the native peoples
encountered. Exchanges also include
references to home and family life in England, and many parcels and souvenirs
are exchanged through the mail (some of which included). The majority of the letters were written by
Jessie Webster.
