Western Fiction

The western story, with its enduring and clear-cut theme of good versus evil, has long been popular. There are approximately 4,000 western novels, most of which are hardbound with dustjackets. The works of Zane Grey, Max Brand, Ernest Haycox, and Louis L'Amour are featured. Other holdings of important western writers include James Oliver Curwood, Bret Harte, Bertha Sinclair, B.M. Bower, Clarence E. Mulford, and Owen Wister.

Westerns were the most popular of all pulps, and more than fifty titles are included here in the Russel B. Nye Popular Culture Collection. The most impressive holdings of pulps in the collection are the nearly complete runs of Street and Smith's bi-weekly Western Story Magazine (1934-48), and Ranch Romances (1926-66). Several hundred titles of Western comic books are included in the Comic Art Collection.
