Detective and Mystery Fiction

Since the middle of the nineteenth century, the detective-mystery story has been one of the mainstays of popular fiction. There are approximately 4,000 paperback and hardcover novels in this category, with important twentieth-century writers well represented. The collection has a complete set of the London Mystery Magazine (1949-1973), a run of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (1941-), The Armchair Detective, a fan magazine which presents essays and book reviews, and representative samples of other mystery and fan magazines from as early as the 1930's. The collection includes spy fiction.

A related collection of detective and mystery comic books is maintained within the division's Comic Art Collection.
