Abstract:Discusses the Americans with Disabilites Act (ADA), signed into law in 1990. Also discusses the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and their impact on golf courses. Discusses superintendents' concerns about mobility devices on turfgrass. States that "the concerns about traffic and turf damage are not unique to mobility devices and can occur with any type of traffic that is applied to turf." Provides suggestions to develop a program that will enable golf courses to meet the ADA Accessibility Guidelines. Recommends that superintendents "consider making a map of accessible routes and alternate cart passageways for [their] course. The map could also provide information about accessible tees, bunkers that may be difficult to access and areas of the course to be avoided." Concludes that "the potential turf damage caused by various adaptive devices is negligible, and there should be very little concern on the part of golf course superintendents as long as common sense and good turf management programs are applied."
