| Abstract: | "Engineers working with small drop spreaders know that the delivery rate of a spreader can be affected if the spreader is pulled backward (thus reversing the direction of agitator rotation), but this phenomenon has not been quantified in published literature. A study was conducted to quantify the effect of reverse operation on three push-type drop spreaders using two spreader settings each. Two plastic drop spreaders, a Sears Craftsman model 711975 and a Scotts AccuGreen 3000, had major rate increases of 127 to 271% when pulled backwards. A Gandy model 24H12, which appears to have a non-directional shut-off bar and agitator, was affected to a lesser extent by direction of travel with rate reductions of 7 to 15% when pulled backwards. Those using walk-behind drop spreaders need to be aware that the spreader settings recommended on product labels are based on forward operation,
and reverse operation can result in very significant errors in delivery rate. |
