Abstract:Discusses both gradual conversion and rapid conversion to bentgrass fairways. Gradual conversion methods and management practices which superintendents found successful were reduced irrigation frequency, use of wetting agents, and reduced nitrogen fertility. These along with lightweight (or triplex) mowing of fairways appears to improve bentgrass population over time. If members/golfers can be prepared and sold on total renovation then Roundup is ideal for converting fairways from a rapid conversion standpoint. This method also allows for changes in design and fairway contours to be made. Also discussed are several techniques for using Roundup, timing of renovation and the management of new seeding after renovation is complete, along with choosing the proper bentgrass varieties and a benefit cost analysis. The success or failure of the renovation techniques summarized in this report depends on many factors, including the weather and the expertise of the superintendent and his crew. A successful renovation with Roundup would result in an approximately 60 to 80 percent stand of bentgrass within a year.
