Location:
Main Library Reference (1st Floor, East) GV558 .E53 1997
Description and Notes:
This two-volume reference tool aims to answer two types of questions about sports. The first type includes questions such as: What makes a skate slide across the ice? What makes a curveball spin? Is there an explanation for Michael Jordan's incredible "hang time"? These are questions about the physics of sports. The second kind of question concerns such issues as: Will weight lifting hurt the knees? How does exercise affect the aging process? Why do many young female gymnasts attempt to "stay small", and what are the physical consequences? These are questions about how the body functions when participating in sports. Both of these areas help widen our knowledge of science as it pertains to sports. Part One deals with Sports and the Body. Each entry deals with a particular sport or a subject common to several sports (catching skills). Each entry provides an introduction with historical information, after which the basic science concepts are presented. Stories from the annals of sports are often integrated into the text. Entries often provide a bibliograpy for further research. Part Two deals with the physiology of sport. Here entries such as Heart and Circulatory System, Knee, and Respiration provide information about how the body works under stress, what type of damage or trauma might be incurred in certain sports, and most important, how injuries can be prevented.
