The Janet A. Ginsburg Chicago Tribune Collection

The colors

"The colors," a famous full-page illustration by John T. McCutcheon, commemorates the sacrifices of soldiers in four cells. Pictured is a gold and green field in times of peace, a red field of dead bodies in times of war, a field of mourners wearing black after war, and a field of white gravestones. In this particular reprint of the illustration, the red cell appears yellow, but readers are encouraged to purchase their own framed, full-color copy of the illustration.
