Old English customs : another mayor, Councillor A. J. Gibbs
Councilor A. John Gibbs, mayor of High Wycombe, England, sits in a chair hung from a scale, thus performing an old tradition. Gibbs wears ceremonial robes, a metal chain and badge on his chest, and a cocked (“bicorn”) hat. To the right of the scale, a police sergeant records the weight. Next to the policeman is a bell ringer sporting long stockings, knickers, vest, frock coat, and cocked (“bicorn”) hat. He also carries a ceremonial staff. Behind the trio are men in top hats.
