Old English customs : London elects a mayor

Sir Harry Twyford (in spectacles), Lord Mayor of the City of London stands with a number of men. All wear ornate robes and 18th century buckled shoes. Most, including Twyford, wear tricorn hats (some festooned with feathers). The Lord Mayor has a metal chain and badge on his chest. At his extreme left, a man sporting a bushy fur hat holds an oversized decorated sword. At extreme right a man sporting a lawyer’s horsehair wig and legal regalia holds an oversized mace. In the background stand London policemen (“Bobbies”) and spectators.
