Old English customs : this is no hatchet burial scene

In an old English legal custom the Solicitor of the City of London, dressed in a business suit, offers a hatchet to the King's Remembrancer, a court official garbed in the traditional dark robes and horse-hair wig of a British lawyer. This ceremony commemorates the annual payment of tools (Quit Rents) to a monarch for the use of crown lands. A woman in a coat and elaborate hat sits next to the Remembrancer.
