Caught bluffing

Editorial cartoon by Carey Orr comments on the tensions between Great Britain and Europe's Fascist Powers. It shows a poker game played on a map of the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa labeled “Map of British Trade Routes.” A confident, pipe-smoking British John Bull, presiding over a massive stack of coins labeled "England's Naval Building Program,” declares “I’ll see you – and raise you seven billion dollars.” Caricatures of sweating Benito Mussolini in Fascist Blackshirt uniform and Adolf Hitler nervously study their cards. A small pile of lira currency labeled “Ethiopia Winnings” lies at Mussolini’s arm.
