Germany's day of terror : Hitler leaving the East Prussian residence of Hindenburg

Chancellor Adolf Hitler, dictator of Nazi Germany, walks down the front steps of German President Paul von Hindenburg’s Neudeck Manor in East Prussia (now Poland) on August 1, 1934. Hindenburg died the following day, and Hitler merged the offices of German president and chancellor. Walking with Hitler is Colonel Oskar von Hindenburg, the president’s son. Hitler, holding a broad-brimmed hat, wears a double-breast suit and Hindenburg sports a dark two-piece suit. Behind the two is a man wearing a Nazi Stormtrooper (SA) brown shirt uniform and another man in a double breasted suit. At the top of the steps are a man in a dark suit and another man wearing a porter’s or doorman’s uniform.
