The plane that takes off 1,000 feet up : the Mayo composite plane

The Short Brothers Mayo composite seaplane/flying boat combination is shown in flight over southeast England. The Short S. 21A Mercury floatplane (G-ADHJ) is mounted rests on a cradle of the Short Maia flying boat (G-ADHK) which was a development of the Short Empire Class flying boat. This awkward looking combination enabled an over loaded Mercury to take off. After separation, the Maia, its task of helping lift the smaller aircraft off the water done, would return to base.
