The party split
The Democratic donkey guides the G.O.P. elephant toward the U.S. Senate. However, only the front half of the elephant (anti-Brookhart Republicans) follows the donkey, while other half (Brookhart republicans) remains in Iowa after being cut down by a sword (Brookhart nomination).
