Shrink Wrapping

Compiled by Lisa Smith, December 7, 2005

Shrink-wrap is used for brittle items that should not go to the commercial bindery or be repaired. This housing keeps loose pages or covers together with the text and offers some protection to the item so that it can be returned to the shelf until such time as it is needed by a patron. A streamer giving patron instructions on opening and returning the item is wrapped around the front cover of the book. A barcode is placed on the back cover. It can be scanned though the shrink-wrap film. A sheet of microchamber paper is placed inside at the front and back covers. A Beseler Machine Model 2014-MB with Tunnel Model T-14-8-D is used to wrap the books in a 75-gauge polyolefin.
